The TBI-Informed Referral Network is a multidisciplinary collaboration of healthcare professionals trained to identify, diagnose, treat, and support athletes experiencing traumatic brain injury and related mental health challenges. The network connects physicians who diagnose TBI with mental health professionals who provide therapeutic treatment and recovery support, ensuring athletes receive coordinated neurological, psychological, and behavioral health care throughout diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
To become the leading interdisciplinary referral network for TBI-informed care in athletics, connecting physicians, mental health professionals, and recovery specialists to deliver integrated, evidence-based support for athletes during and after their careers.
Improve early identification of TBI in athletes through physician partnerships
Provide trauma-informed mental health services for athletes coping with concussion and brain injury
Establish standardized referral pathways between diagnosing physicians and mental health providers
Develop a certification program that ensures all providers are trained in TBI-informed care
Promote long-term recovery outcomes, including mental health stabilization, substance misuse prevention, and cognitive rehabilitation

Diagnostic physicians serve as the entry point into the referral network. Their role includes diagnosing concussion or TBI, providing neurological evaluation, referring athletes into the mental health network, and monitoring neurological recovery.
We're recruiting physicians across sports medicine, orthopedics, emergency medicine, neurology, primary care, and neuropsychology — particularly those with experience working with collegiate, professional, or retired athletes, military veterans with brain injury, or youth athletes in high-contact sports.
Behavioral health providers deliver mental health treatment and rehabilitation support once an athlete has been referred. This includes psychotherapists (trauma-informed therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, identity and career transition counseling), psychologists (neuropsychological screening, cognitive rehabilitation, return-to-play readiness assessments), psychiatrists (medication management, mood stabilization), and substance abuse therapists (addiction counseling, relapse prevention, dual diagnosis treatment).
All providers joining the network will complete the RAG TBI-Informed Care Certification Program, an eight-module training covering the neurological and psychological effects of traumatic brain injury, athlete identity and career transition, trauma-informed therapeutic approaches, substance use and pain management risk, coordinated care and referral protocols, and crisis intervention.
Providers who complete the program receive the RAG Certified TBI-Informed Mental Health Provider designation and a listing in the RAG National Referral Directory, along with ongoing continuing education opportunities. Certification is renewed every two years. We're recruiting physicians across sports medicine, orthopedics, emergency medicine, neurology, primary care, and neuropsychology — particularly those with experience working with collegiate, professional, or retired athletes, military veterans with brain injury, or youth athletes in high-contact sports.

The TBI-Informed Referral Network is a signature program of Recovery Associates Group, led by Dr. Scherri Culp, DBH, LPC-MHSP, ADS, EMDR-C, Executive Clinical Director of Recovery Associates Group.
Dr. Culp will be presenting on psychological and neurological trauma at the Athletes Abroad Summit, July 8–9, at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
